Avalanche - The Duke 29/6/2023

It's the last day of Avalanche's The Duke Residency shows of June 2023. Here I was, on a Thursday night, going to watch another show of theirs while I got the free time.

First to perform is Bifter, whose songs they performed live in Drop D tuning establishes them in the hybrid of hard rock and blues metal genres. Rory had a deep grungy vocal delivery which made me truly feel like I'm in a 90s hard rock bar or cafe at night after work. Nathan kept the bass rhythm smooth and groovy, although he would have his left foot on the surface where the drum kit nestles at times. Angus kept me headbanging for most of the set, given anytime he bashes the china or hi-hat cymbals hard during any breakdown, my head and neck are feeling it. Luke's concentration on the keyboard is kept very consistent. Though, he was bopping himself up and down a lot, like there's an invisible springboard underneath his feet and gear. On the harmonica, he was swaying quite a lot, which showed so much enthusiasm on his part. Although there was a lot of energy they conveyed during their set, they kept me busy headbanging.

Avalanche continues to impress me and the audience. Their stage presence is impressively memorable, given their unique personalities and skills they showcase on stage. Steven's high notes are still belted out exquisitely with power while Arthur continues flicking his hair up at random intervals while playing smoothly yet consistently; Ryan kept the flow and rhythm steady on drums while Veronica continues to slay her guitar solos with unique shredding techniques. Once again, Veronica going into the audience pit is unique to Avalanche's shows; she's playing opposite of you and everyone around their proximity, which gives a feeling that she's interacting with you. I found this very effective to keep the audience engaged.

With Avalanche's final residency show at the Duke of June 2023 a success, I couldn't have found a better Thursday night to spend. I'm so keen to see where they venture to next...
