Despite all their rage, the Smashing Pumpkins are still just rats in a cage. They brought over their world tour down under last night playing to a sold out Sydney show with help from a few friends, Jane's Addiction, Battlesnake and Amyl and the Sniffers.
First up was Battlesnake, the first that hit me was their theatrics and goofyness. Their monk costumes was something out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail which worked well with their medieval hard rock songs. The 7 piece Sydney band proved their worthy to open for KISS and now the Smashing Pumpkins.
Next up was the thrashing Amyl and the Sniffers. From the word go, their punk rock attitude took affect on the crowd. The love of Bon Scott and Chrissy Amphlett,
Amy Taylor powerstrutted through the 1 hour set and causing chaos in the moshpit. Billy Corgan later said he can't wait for them to become big.
Jane's Addiction, I was surprised how influencial this pioneer of alternative metal band was until they came on stage. Perry Farrell's stage presents felt you know who he is and what would will expect, Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll. Their set made me understand why Jane's Addiction was such an influence in 90s music with all the heavy hitters like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins. They were different.
Last but not least, the smiling politely, The Smashing Pumpkins. To say it bluntly, they were amazing. Billy Corgan's voice was track perfect even with using throat spray throughout the gig, James Iha brought humble chilled vibes while roaring out his guitar and Jimmy Chamberlin never missed a hit on the drums. It was truly an experience hearing hits like 1979, ZERO, Cherub Rock, Today and of course Bullet with Butterfly Wings. 90s music at its finest.
