REVIEW+ GALLERY: Night at Barracks (13/9 - 6/10/2024), North Head Manly feat. Icehouse & Jon Stevens

Words and Photographs by Jordan Newton

The Night at the Barracks music festival kicked off for it's 4th year running at the Barracks Precinct in North Manly, showcasing what Australia has to offer. The festival is presented by Future Super and their goal in investment of renewables energy for a future free from fossil fuels.

As the sun set over the northern beaches on Friday night, so to did the crowds arrive off the shuttle buses and into the over 190 year old station. Before the night began, descendants of the Gayamagal people blessed the site with an welcoming ceremony. Enknowledging the history of Car-rang-gel (First Nations name for Manly) and elders past and present from which the concert was taking place.

ICEHOUSE featuring Rolling Holy 13/9/2024:

Rolling Holy:

Rolling Holy on stage at the Barracks

Rolling Holy started off the evenings festivities with their mix of indie rock inspired tracks with a cosmic feast of alt-country guitars and psychedelic groove. The band consists of Jon Cotter (rocking a 60s inspired George Harrison outfit and tone), Blade Hills (Wicked Things guitarist), Mitch King (bass), Joaquin Perez (Teddy Rizzo's drummer) and Evan Davies (guitarist and son of Icehouse Singer Iva Davies). They later continued on over to play a set at Old Manly Boatshed to celebrate the night.

ICEHOUSE:

Appearing out of the mist and light shows, Iva Davies, Paul Gildea and rest of Icehouse played Australia's national pub anthems. Although Iva and Paul joked about how old they're getting, Icehouse is one of those bands that sounds exactly the same since 1977. Perfectly.

As the night progressed, the crowd beat the cold, got off their seats and danced to Icehouse's iconic songs like Great Southern Land, Crazy, Electric Blue and Miss Divine. I last saw them at the Fire Fight Charity concert in Sydney back in 2020 pre covid and if there was a band that made you most proud to be an Aussie in that moment, these are the guys.

Jon Stevens featuring Taylor B-W and Jr Reyne (21/9/2024):

Taylor B-W:

Taylor B-W appeared in the stage with a sassy, impassioned, strong stage presence. The daughter of Dragons' Mark Williams, performed her R&B drum & bass catalogue with an acoustic twist along side Matt Walsham on guitar which was an usual move for her. She also made us remember what Earth, Wind and Fire keep asking us every year. Did you remember?

Jr Reyne:

Jaime Robbie Reyne or Jr Rayne turned things around with his blues band, The Ford Lazers. A highlight was to see if and when James Freeman (guitarist) would go into a trance during guitar solos, like if Pete Townshend from the Who was on stage. The son of Australian Crawl's James Reyne, Jamie has made a name for himself in both film and music for the past 20 years, even collaborating with Jessica Mauboy (who is also playing at the Barracks later in the next couple of weeks) in the show, The Secret Daughter in 2016-2017 on Channel 7. With Jamie on acoustic guitar, Jacob Aedam on drums and the quiet James Freeman on electric guitar, they got the crowd ready in anticipation for what was next to come.

JON STEVENS:

As soon as the show started, Jon's magnetic energy was on full display for the first song from INXS, 'Kick'. From one banga to another with a track from his original band, Noiseworks 'Touch'. Jon has fronted both Noiseworks since 1986 & INXS between 2000 -2003 after Michael Hutchence sadly passed away in 1997. Both are some of Sydney's biggest music exports. All of songs performed that evening were released over a short 10 year period from 1982 to 1991, weeks apart and in some cases recorded in the same studio on the same day. The setlist in itself is a study into Australian rock.

"Joining INXS was one of those things you know. When I first played with them, it was basically me helping my mates out. One of those proudest moments things for me was helping them regain their confidence" - Jon Stevens

A peaceful and beautiful moment when the crowd harmonized in singing INXS' anthem 'Never Tear Us Apart'. What made the night special was the fact both INXS & Noiseworks were formed in Sydney. Jon Stevens' power house vocals and charged up energy are the representation of Australia music, success and the soundtrack of our lives.

Everybody get your hands in the air and celebrate life! - Jon Stevens
